Forward

The goal of the Water Outreach Education project, also known as the Best Education Practices or BEP Project, is to help natural resource management and outreach professionals to choose appropriate education techniques and resources for their water management programs. Recent work has been focused on four project objectives:

  • Developing a shortcut for exploring education research and theories that can be applied effectively to water outreach efforts
  • Completing a review of thousands of papers in journals and journal databases to identify best education practices for specific audiences.
  • Building the Water Outreach Education pilot Web site to provide access to Project products and other education resources.
  • Planning the BEP Symposium (June, 2004, UW-Madison)

The BEP Symposium engaged national Extension water quality coordinators, outreach professionals, and key stakeholders in showcasing successful work, fine-tuning BEP Project products and developing strategies to better assist natural resource professionals in meeting their water management education and outreach objectives. Meeting sessions include a mix of speakers, research paper and poster presentations, interactive events, and networking opportunities.

Expansion of the collection of audience-specific BEPs hinges on (1) identification of relevant research, (2) discovery of links to published information about water management topics, and (3) access to case studies that demonstrate best education practices. Symposium paper and poster presentations showcased water management research projects and programs that have successfully incorporated best education practices. These sessions provided the backbone of our symposium discussion by covering one of the following content areas:

  • Multiple studies of audience specific BEPs
  • Research about audience specific BEPs
  • Case study where BEPs have been applied
  • Topic-specific water outreach resources

In addition, participants applied their considerable knowledge and experience as they:

  • Reviewed, refined, and expanded Water Outreach Education (BEP) Project resources including the pilot Web site.
  • Made recommendations for promoting sound education practices among water management professionals.
  • Suggested avenues for future action.
