Use Audiovisuals [1]

Major Types of Audiovisuals

5. Slides

Advantages

  • Let's you show pictures in a larger setting - a picture's worth 1,000 words.
  • Can show much more detail than overheads, flip charts.
  • Can be used effectively for almost any size audience.

Disadvantages

  • Must be shown in a darkened room (presenter cannot be seen by audience).
  • Using too many slides can tire or bore the audience. Approximately 10-15 minutes is effective length.
  • A slide presentation requires a high degree of preparation and is highly structured.

Tips for Using Slides

  • Use only high quality slides (avoid over- or underexposed, out of focus, etc.).
  • Try (very hard!) to use only horizontal slides (these fit the shape of the screen; if vertical slides are also used, you lose considerable screen area or cut off the tops of the projected images.
  • "Storyboard" your presentation; this technique can help improve any presentation.
